Understanding 7Cs of Communication- Learn to Communicate Better
Communication is the act of transferring information from one person or group to another. Every communication involves a sender, message and receiver.
The 7Cs of communication is a checklist or you can consider this as a set of criteria to improve your communication style.
According to the seven Cs, communication needs to be: clear, concise, concrete, correct, coherent, complete and courteous.
Clarity/Clear
- The message should be clear i.e. the receiver should be able to understand the message received without any difficulty.
- Receiver shouldn’t have to “read between the lines” and make assumptions on their own to understand what the sender is trying to say.
- The message should emphasize on a single goal at a time
Concise
- Keep the message short and brief
- The short and brief message is more comprehensive and helps in retaining the receiver’s attention
- Avoid lengthy messages
Concrete
- The communication should be concrete, which means the message should be clear and particularly such that no room for misinterpretation is left.
Correct
- Use correct language, check for any grammatical errors or spelling mistake before sending message.
- Clarify all facts and figures mentioned.
Coherent
- When your communication is coherent, it’s logical. All points are connected and relevant to the main topic, and the tone and flow of the text is consistent.
Complete
- The message should be complete, i.e. it must include all the relevant information as required by the intended audience.
- The complete information gives answers to all the questions of the receivers and helps in better decision-making
Courteous
- Courteous communication is friendly, open, and honest. There are no hidden insults or passive-aggressive tones.
- You keep your receiver’s viewpoint in mind, and you’re empathetic to their needs.
