Understanding 7Cs of Communication- Learn to Communicate Better

Communication is the act of transferring information from one person or group to another. Every communication involves a sender, message and receiver.

The 7Cs of communication is a checklist or you can consider this as a set of criteria to improve your communication style.

According to the seven Cs, communication needs to be: clear, concise, concrete, correct, coherent, complete and courteous.

Clarity/Clear
  • The message should be clear i.e. the receiver should be able to understand the message received without any difficulty.
  • Receiver shouldn’t have to “read between the lines” and make assumptions on their own to understand what the sender is trying to say.
  • The message should emphasize on a single goal at a time
Concise
  • Keep the message short and brief
  • The short and brief message is more comprehensive and helps in retaining the receiver’s attention
  • Avoid lengthy messages
Concrete
  • The communication should be concrete, which means the message should be clear and particularly such that no room for misinterpretation is left.
Correct
  • Use correct language, check for any grammatical errors or spelling mistake  before sending message.
  • Clarify all facts and figures mentioned.
Coherent
  • When your communication is coherent, it’s logical. All points are connected and relevant to the main topic, and the tone and flow of the text is consistent.
Complete
  • The message should be complete, i.e. it must include all the relevant information as required by the intended audience.
  • The complete information gives answers to all the questions of the receivers and helps in better decision-making
Courteous
  • Courteous communication is friendly, open, and honest. There are no hidden insults or passive-aggressive tones.
  • You keep your receiver’s viewpoint in mind, and you’re empathetic to their needs.
Use the 7 Cs of Communication as a checklist for all of your communication. By doing this you will be able to communicate better
